Removing Log Jams

Autumn tends to bring a series of spates on all our rivers that bring down tree branches, fallen leaves and other debris. It's important on smaller waters that provide spawning opportunities for migrating trout and salmon to check for restrictions on old weirs, sluices and fish passes.

Today trust members Mike Mechan and Fred Carrie got the waders on and removed a serious log jam on the Vinny Water at Friockheim that had formed an impassible barrier to spawning fish as well as posing a flood risk by holding the river back.

The next spate will likely bring down more debris and this work will have to be repeated.
